Candy Kaku!

I came across Candy Kaku (aunty) during the wee hours on my way to the office in a Mumbai local. She might have been in her early 50s. A calm, focused lady, dressed in attire most suitable for a Government office.

So that day, as per the railway standards, locals were running behind schedule, which led to more overcrowding than usual.  As a result, only a few courageous, determined ladies could manage to get into the ladies' compartment of the local train. I was simply lucky to be one of them.

Once in, most of us made great efforts to park ourselves, but Candy Kaku. The Great Candy Kaku was standing right next to me. While I was still struggling to find my place, she furiously fished out her Samsung Galaxy phone and began to play....Candy Crush!

I was amazed at the fact that she was at such ease in one of the most undesired situations. Me being me, I was curious, and I had to strike up a conversation with her. As we spoke Candy Kaku admitted that she was addicted to Candy Crush and that she didn't realise the trouble she caused or was caused by others. "Every opportunity to play is grabbed”, she said. What she said was so true….she really didn't realise what all was happening around her.

I have come across many Candy Crush fans, but Candy Kaku was the one who left a lasting impression. She set my train of thought in motion - a saga of a common man, fighting everyday battles and finding peace at the same time.

My family was informed about my condition - my parents and in-laws that I couldn’t speak. They were instructed that all calls at the door and landline should be answered by anyone but me.  So, Silent Me was managing stuff quietly until faced with challenges.  Challenge number 1 I was in the living room, seated next to the landline, which started to ring. Otherwise, I would have answered the phone, but today I had a problem; I couldn’t speak. Three, four, five times the phone rang, but no one came to answer the phone.  I was unable to call out to get the attention of my FIL (remember I couldn’t speak), who was the only person at home other than me. Fortunately, he arrived in time.  Answering the phone, or getting someo...
